What’s New?

May 20, 2011

“There’s nothing new under the son.”

Really? Then why are so many pastors, preachers, teachers, and churches trying to do something “new” with Jesus? I find it morbidly fascinating to observe so much of our Christian society chasing the rainbow of modern culture to presumably find a pot of pedestrian gold.

God eluded to a more secure and assured way of capturing the hearts of men when our influence seems to be waning:
Jer. 6: 16 This is what the LORD says:
“Stand at the crossroads and look;
ask for the ancient paths,
ask where the good way is, and walk in it,
and you will find rest for your souls.”
However, it seems those in positions to preach have decided:
“‘We will not walk in it.'”
I see through “old time” ministers God is warning us and drawing us back to our roots and foundations:

17 I appointed watchmen over you and said,
‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’
But you said, ‘We will not listen.’

We WANT our “modern” gospel, and we will defend it mercilessly. Those old timers are heralded as religious bigots, Pharisees, loveless, lifeless, judgmental – how ironic. Those of us who perceive the warning are declared ignorant, simple, or religious and hypocritical.
Your good is not God, sir. It sounds good, it feels good, but God alone is good.

It is GOD, and not I, who is warning the priests, the prophets, and the preachers:
Jer. 18: 15 Yet my people have forgotten me;
they burn incense to worthless idols,
which made them stumble in their ways
and in the ancient paths.
They made them walk in bypaths
and on roads not built up.
Whenever we walk more in books and influences outside the Bible that also don’t point us back to the Bible, we are in bypaths and on roads not built up – without strong and sustaining foundation – or direction for that matter. When we seek after speakers more often than The Spirit, we are burning incense to worthless idols. “it is the power of THE GOSPEL unto salvation.” Not talent, not showmanship, not pyrotechnics or modern worship. We don’t need a “new” way to reach people, we need a re-newed way. There is no “new” way! There’s the ancient paths, and then there’s the bypaths.
Jer. 6: 10 To whom can I speak and give warning?
Who will listen to me?
Their ears are closed [a]
so they cannot hear.
The word of the LORD is offensive to them;

they find no pleasure in it.
We are at a crossroads of only wanting to be “entertained” and therefore can find little pleasure in the straight word of the LORD.

That little citation next to “Their ears are closed” is a note to say it literally means, uncircumcised. Are our ears blocked with foreskin; are we being seen by God as an unbeliever – a pagan gentile – and NOT a son of Abraham? Because the covenant was evidenced and made a contract when Abraham took up circumcision. We are supposed to be called children of Abraham. But are we if our ears are still not circumcised?

If we only long to hear the ringing of ourselves and not God’s voice in our inner ear, are we marching to the beat of our own eardrum?

Jesus is only recorded as saying, “Follow Me.” Paul said, “Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul?” There is no man who has more access to understanding the Word of God and God himself for you than you. When you receive the power of the Holy Spirit you are given the power to understand and commune with God’s word, and therefore God himself. There is no longer a priest, prophet, preacher, or king who is needed between you and God: The veil was rent! Start living in the Holy of Holies!

How about we take the time to eat of the harvest already cultivated, and drink from the Source. Today’s books and Christian paraphernalia are akin to fast food. High in convenience, low in nutrition. High in saturation, low in satisfaction. The Bible, tried and true, full of godliness, nourishes the soul and satisfies our deepest longing: truth in the inmost parts, purpose, belonging, understanding
